Your Complete Guide to the Tetanus Vaccine: Benefits, Side Effects, and Key Information

What is the Tetanus Vaccine?

Tetanus is a serious bacterial infection caused by the Clostridium tetani bacteria. The bacteria release a toxin that affects the nervous system, leading to painful muscle stiffness and spasms, often starting in the jaw (lockjaw). Tetanus can occur when the bacteria enter the body through a wound, particularly deep cuts or puncture wounds. The tetanus vaccine is typically given as part of the DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis) vaccine series in childhood, followed by booster doses every 10 years to maintain immunity.
